In April 2018, my daughter and I decided to team up to host a radio show on the delightful community station Freeform Portland. It was so much fun coming up with playlists for our biweekly show. I’d been a DJ in high school and college and had been on a long hiatus from the airwaves. My daughter later on had her own show in college too.

Once again, clay played a role here along with skinny popsicle sticks, miniature furniture, tons of hot glue, and a large collection of daily wear contact lens packaging for the record collection fence.
We had played songs from all these records on our show at one point or another.
At the time, the Freeform Portland studio was located in a charming old building in North Portland near Portland Community College. I did my best to recreate the look and feel of the studio. I reconstructed the steep stairway. I printed a screenshot from our actual show log. I made weird curtains similar to those in the studio overlooking North Killingsworth St. And I arranged the furniture in a similar manner.
The station shut down its physical studio during the pandemic, but the records continue to spin now in a new location. I’m on a break from my show for a while but I hope to return in the future.
